The Federal Reserve, OCC, FDIC, and CFPB share federal banking oversight. State banking departments handle state-chartered institutions. Congress sets the underlying authority for all of them.

Financial-sector legislation covers banking regulation, securities markets, consumer credit, capital requirements, fintech, and cryptocurrency oversight. The Dodd-Frank Act of 2010 and its subsequent modifications are the dominant framework.

The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act passed after the 2008 financial crisis. It created the CFPB, restricted proprietary trading by banks, and set up new mechanisms for unwinding failing financial firms.
